Tracking & attribution

How to verify a social commerce tool actually tracks what it claims.

Every vendor puts 'attribution' on their homepage. Very few can prove it in a demo. This is the short list of checks that expose whether the tracking is real or a dashboard glued to last-click UTMs.

The one question that separates real tracking from theatre

Open a live order in the vendor's dashboard. Ask: which specific piece of content — which post, which creator, which platform — produced this order? If the answer requires a channel grouping, a modelled attribution window, or "we can approximate that," the tool doesn't do post-level tracking.

A serious social commerce platform ties the tap, the checkout, and the order to the individual asset that produced it — server-side, first-party, and reconciled against your commerce backend nightly. Anything less and your reporting is a guess dressed up as a number.

Four attribution capabilities to insist on

Post-level order attribution

Every order maps back to the exact video, photo, or livestream that produced it — with the creator, product, and platform attached. Not a channel bucket, not a modelled share.

First-party, server-side events

The tracking works even when iOS blocks the pixel and the browser drops the cookie. Look for a server-to-server event stream you can inspect, not just a marketing script.

Nightly reconciliation to your commerce backend

Refunds, cancellations, and chargebacks flow back into the attribution automatically, so a creator's reported revenue matches what actually landed in the bank.

Product-level tracking, not just link-level

The tool should know which SKU sold from which post — including when a customer bought a different variant after clicking. Link-only tracking hides half of what's actually happening.

The demo test you can run in five minutes

You don't need a proof-of-concept to test attribution. On any social commerce tool's live demo, run this quick sequence and watch how the vendor responds. Hesitation is data.

  • — Ask them to open a real order less than 24 hours old.
  • — Ask which post, which creator, and which SKU produced it.
  • — Ask what happens to that number when the customer refunds tomorrow.
  • — Ask to see the raw event log behind the order, not the summary chart.
